3.0 Code of Behaviour

The Code of Conduct for Peninsula Shores District School has been developed by parents, students and educators in alignment with Ministry documents to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to develop to their full potential both academically and socially.  All students, staff and visitors to PSDS are expected to uphold accepted rules and morals. The most important realization for students is that each individual is responsible for the consequences of his/her own behaviour. This code applies to Peninsula Shores District School, all school sponsored activities, both at home and away, and on board all school buses serving the school.

3. 1 Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs

The Bluewater District School Board’s Policy on the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs clearly outlines offences and consequences regarding the use of these substances. The following summary outlines the violations and consequences in the policy. Students will be in violation of the Board’s policy if they:

- use tobacco;
- use or possess alcohol;
- use or possess inhalants for the purpose of intoxication;
- use or possess illicit or performance enhancing drugs;
- are under the influence of alcohol or other drugs (excluding tobacco)

while on school property or Board-sponsored co-curricular trips or events.

3.2 Sanctions

The following sanctions will apply to violations.

First Offence
For a smoking offence, the student will be warned in writing and a copy of the letter will be sent to the Grey-Bruce Health Unit.   For offences concerning the use of other substances, the student will be referred to Administration and the parent or guardian will be contacted.  

Second Offence
For a second smoking offence, the student will be levied a fine of $100.00 plus a $15.00 administrative fee by the G.B.H.U. Students under 16 years old must appear in court.  For offences concerning the use of other substances, the student will be referred to administration and administration will contact a parent or legal guardian and arrange for a meeting prior to the student’s return to classes. The meeting will be used to identify the consequences of further violations, and to ask the student to confirm his or her understanding of the seriousness of the matter.  There will be a referral for appropriate counseling and the possibility of a suspension.

Third Offence
For a third smoking offence, the student will be levied a fine of $200.00 by the G.B.H.U. Students under 16 years old must appear in court.  For offences concerning the use of other substances, the student will be referred to administration and administration will contact a parent or legal guardian and arrange for a meeting prior to the student’s return to classes. The meeting will be used to identify the consequences of further violations, and to ask the student to confirm his or her understanding of the seriousness of the matter.  There will be a referral for appropriate counseling and the possibility of a suspension.

3.3 Field Trips

Should violations occur on Board-sponsored co-curricular trips or events, the staff person in charge will provide the response. If, in the judgment of this person there are compelling reasons to do so, the trip will be terminated as soon as possible and students will return to their home schools. Students who may have consumed alcohol or illicit drugs will be isolated. Upon return to the home school, parents or a legal guardian will be called to transport these students home.

The responsible staff person may elect to continue the trip and/or have the offending student returned home. Under such circumstances, care must be taken to ensure the safety of any students believed to have consumed alcohol or illicit drugs. Violations involving the use or possession of tobacco need not result in termination of the trip, at the discretion of the staff member in charge. Disciplinary measures would be imposed upon the student’s return to the home school.

Upon first offense at an off-site event, the student will receive a suspension upon return to regular classes, consistent with the disciplinary provisions of this policy. Furthermore, the student will be suspended from further participation in all co-curricular activities, including weekend activities, for ninety school days.

While participating in a school-sponsored co-instructional activity or dance, any behaviour that leads to the mandatory suspension “being under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs” or the mandatory expulsion “trafficking in weapons or illegal drugs” or “giving alcohol to a minor” will result in a mandatory consequence (suspension or expulsion) and the student will receive an additional suspension from that activity, club, team or school dances for:

- 90 school days for school dances (If the infraction occurs near the end of the academic year, it will be applied in the upcoming year until the full ninety day term has been completed.)
- 90 school days or the remainder of the season, whichever comes first for a school team or club

The suspension from a specific team, organized group or type of event will not extend to other teams, groups or events. Suspensions under this provision will apply Board-wide. In the case of student graduation or transfer from one school to another, principals will notify the receiving school of a suspension in progress.

Students who may have consumed alcohol or illicit drugs will be isolated, and parents or legal guardians called to provide transportation home. Should the responsible staff member be unable to contact a parent or legal guardian, or emergency contact, he or she will contact the local police department to look after the student.


3.4 Search Procedure

It is the responsibility of the principal to advise the students at the beginning of the school year, and through the School Code of Behaviour, that desks and lockers are considered school property, and that a search of such property is permissible by school administration.

Any search conducted must be based on reasonable grounds. School administrators must have reasonable grounds to believe that there has been a breach of school regulations and that a search of a student’s desks or lockers would reveal evidence of that breach.

It may be reasonable for a principal or vice-principal to search lockers. Administrators may ask students to open up personal backpacks or handbags or to remove shoes and socks where there are reasonable grounds to believe that a student is carrying or distributing an illegal substance. In any case where a more intensive search is required, school administrators must notify the police, parents, and area superintendent. The search will be conducted by the police. Efforts must be made to notify parents of any process involving their children and the police.


4.0  Honesty, Respect and Equity

4,1 Honesty

Plagiarism, cheating on tests, examinations or assignments will result in a mark of “R” on that assessment. Parents will be informed in such instances. Any theft of property will be reported to parents and may result in a suspension from school as well as police/court involvement.

4.2 Respect

Students will use acceptable language at all times on school property, school buses and during all school sponsored activities. Students will treat everyone with respect, recognizing the right of all people in the school to learn or to work.  All conflicts are to be resolved in a civilized manner through verbal mediation with the assistance of an objective third party, if necessary.

4.3 Dress Expectations

A school is a place of learning and business. Everyone is expected to wear modest clothing, which appears neat, presentable and appropriate for an active learning environment. Any clothing that is not consistent with the moral tone of the school is prohibited.  Any questionable items will be dealt with by the school’s administration.

4.4 Property

Students will treat the school building, property and equipment with respect. Hence, all garbage is to be disposed of properly.  Students will conduct themselves in a calm, quiet, orderly manner (i.e. running and/or yelling in the halls are not permitted).  Skateboards, roller blades and scooters may not be used on school property. Cell phones may not be used within the school building. The use of MP3 players in the classroom is at the discretion of individual teachers. Skateboards and roller blades must be carried from the school boundary into the school. It is up to the individual teacher to decide if such items may be stored in the classroom.
